Easier study permits for Master's and PhD students in Canada

Canada has decided to simplify and expedite the study permit process for foreign students pursuing higher education, particularly those enrolled in Master’s and PhD programs. Under the new policy, it has been announced that decisions regarding PhD applications will be made within two weeks.

According to Canadian immigration authorities, starting January 1, 2026, students enrolling in Master’s and PhD programs at public institutions will be exempt from the requirement to submit a provincial or territorial attestation letter.

The new policy also allows students in graduate programs to bring their families to Canada. Furthermore, eligible students will be able to apply for a post-graduation work permit upon completing their studies.

Decline in the Number of International Students

While the total number of international students in Canada has dropped by one-third compared to 2024, the proportion of graduate students has risen from 12% to 21% during the same period.

According to the Canadian government, the primary objective of this policy shift is to attract talented students and top-tier researchers from around the world to Canada. The government states that this measure aims to maintain Canada's appeal in the fields of higher education and research.
