Major relief for electricity consumers across the country will end in August

The ongoing major relief for electricity consumers across the country, including Karachi, is nearing its end, after which electricity is likely to become more expensive from next month.

According to sources, the quarterly adjustment relief given in the form of a reduction of one rupee 99 paise per unit in electricity rates will complete its period in August this month. This relief was implemented from June 2026, under which consumers are getting a total benefit of more than 67 billion 17 crore rupees.

According to reports, after the end of this relief, the quarterly adjustment for April to June 2026 is likely to be implemented from next month, which is likely to result in an increase in electricity rates. Electricity distribution companies have submitted an application to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) in this regard, in which it is proposed to impose an additional burden of more than 23 billion rupees on consumers. This increase amounts to about one rupee per unit, however, the final decision will be taken by Nepra.
