Chinese scientists accelerate maglev train to 800 km/h in 5.3 seconds

Chinese scientists have achieved another major milestone in maglev technology, accelerating an experimental train from zero to 800 km/h in just 5.3 seconds.
During the test at the Donghu Laboratory in Hubei, the model train, weighing about 1.1 tons, achieved this speed on a one-kilometer test track.
According to Chinese officials, this is a new world record for the fastest acceleration over a short distance in maglev technology.
Maglev trains are slightly elevated above the track by magnetic force, which eliminates friction between the wheels and the track. An electromagnetic system installed in the track generates magnetic waves and propels the train forward at high speed.
The highlight of the test was not only achieving the record speed, but also stopping the train safely and under control.
After reaching 800 km/h, the train gradually slowed down over a distance of about 200 meters and came to a smooth stop.
The Donghu laboratory has previously set records in maglev technology. In June 2025, tests were carried out on the same platform at speeds of 650 km/h and 700 km/h in July.
According to experts, these experiments could prove important for the development of ultra-high-speed land transport as well as other advanced transport technologies in the future.
However, this speed of 800 km/h is not yet the speed of a commercial passenger train, but the result of experimental tests.
