PTA issues warning to block WhatsApp accounts registered on inactive SIMs

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned users that WhatsApp accounts registered on inactive, cancelled or unused SIM cards may be blocked at any time.

The PTA has said in a statement that WhatsApp accounts established on inactive mobile numbers are likely to be used for fraud, deception and other illegal activities, in view of which action is being taken against such accounts.

The authority has directed users to ensure that their WhatsApp account is linked to a mobile number that is active and in use by them.

The PTA says that cancelled or deactivated mobile numbers can be issued to another user later, which increases the risk of misuse of the former user’s personal information and WhatsApp account.

PTA has advised users whose mobile numbers have been deactivated or deactivated to immediately transfer their accounts to a new and active number through WhatsApp’s “Change Number” feature. According to the authority, the move aims to improve digital security, protect user data and prevent cyber fraud. Users have been urged to check the status of their SIM and transfer their WhatsApp account to an active number if necessary.
